I'm going to assume most people reading this blog will have already heard about this, but just in case you might want to check out Google Flu Trends. This is a very cool little project that tracks how the flu around the U.S., based on how people search for flu-related keywords.
Thinking about this a bit more, I'm interested to see how a similar idea might be used by public health experts to track other relevant issues - potential complications with prescription drugs, for example. I have a hunch that Google and the people working on this have barely scratched the surface of what Google could do for tracking health issues, so here's hoping they're able to take this technology in new and useful directions.
